Young teen in Cork Ireland dies of Lyme disease and Co

The late Saoirse Trant
1994-2013

There was widespread shock and dismay in Cork when news spread of the death of teenager Saoirse Trant, 19. Saoirse passed away in Cork University Hospital on Monday, December 9th with her family around her.

Remembered fondly for her selflessness, humour, strength, and kindness, Saoirse was born on October 26th 1994 and was the eldest of five children. Saoirse was born in Naples, Italy and moved to Ireland with her family at the age of two.

After finishing primary school education in the Gaelcolaiste, Saoirse’s younger sister Maeliosa became seriously ill with leukemia. Saoirse was the perfect match for Maeliosa and became Maeliosa’s bone marrow donor.

A year later Saoirse’s sister Aoife was diagnosed with neuroblastoma and sadly passed away six months later at the age of ten, on December 9th 2008.

Saoirse went on and completed her secondary school education in the Gaelcolaiste and went on to University where she was studying dentistry. Saoirse loved the outdoors, she loved mountain climbing, hiking, rowing and surfing. Her brother and sisters were her best friends, they went everywhere together.

Saoirse became seriously ill three years ago and was confined to a wheelchair ever since. Although she had no use of her legs, she was so grateful to have from her waist up. There was a time when her only was of communicating was by blinking so she was grateful to have what she had.

Saoirse accepted her illness and was determined to get better but sadly the disease overcame her. Saoirse died due to lyme disease, lyme carditis, bartonella, babesiosis and sepsis.

Saoirse was an inspiration to so many people. She always had the widest and brightest smile on her face despite her being so ill. Her strength gave everyone around her strength, her faith gave everyone faith, and her hope gave everyone hope.

The removal of Saoirse’s remains took place from the Trant home, Spideal on Wednesday, December 11th to Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Requiem Mass was offered on Thursday morning at 10 am with funeral immediately afterwards to St. Bernadette’s Cemetery.

Saoirse is sadly missed by her mother and father, Susan and Cormac, sisters Maeliosa and Cliona, brother Cathal. Grandparents Michael and Maura, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Ar dheis De go raibh a Anam dilis.
